You're never too old to learn new things !

I loved art classes all through school.  My parents encouraged me to concentrate on a "real" career that would be more financially rewarding, which sadly I did.

When I was in my early 60’s, my mother was admitted to long term care because she suffered a number of physical issues including the loss of much of her sight.  The facility offered beginner art classes and she showed a real interest in giving art a try if  I could sit in with her and assist her when/if she needed it.  The facility agreed, and my Saturday mornings became booked with her art class.  Thus began both her and my art journey.  It didn’t take long for me to become the art instructor’s assistant !  He was a lovely gentleman in his 80’s and as time progressed he taught the residents and me everything he knew. As the years passed,  I think he saw his opportunity to step back and push me into the position when he decided to retire.  And retire he did, resulting in me 'volunteering', at his request, to teach the class for an additional 5 years.

Meanwhile, I was developing my own painting style, and preparing to retire at long last from my business career at a major accounting firm. Since retiring, I have been able to focus full time on my art.  I currently  belong to art groups in Mississauga (Clarkson Society of Artists), in Oakville to the Oakville Art Society, in Burlington to the Burlington Fine Arts Association and have held different positions on the boards of both the Clarkson Society of Artists, and the Oakville Art Society.

In the last few years, I have focused on watercolour as my medium of choice.  This decision was actually made because it seemed easier to transport from place to place, however, I have fallen completely in love with watercolour and its qualities.  There’s no turning back for me now !  I wish I could paint a little more loosely, but I think my detail based career continues to influence the subjects that attract me and the way I need to paint.

As I continue on my art journey self doubt still rears her head and I remember this quote :

“What if I fall ?"  Oh but my darling, what if you fly ?”
